This intricately carved antique Indian panel depicts Ganesh on the left and Gaja Lakshmi on the right. Gaja Lakshmi or Gajalaxmi means Lakshmi with elephants. She sits atop a lotus throne and symbolises both fertility and abundance whilst being bathed by elephants. Gaja Lakshmi motifs are commonly found in both Hinduism & Buddhism.
The style of carving indicates it to be Gujarati in origin. It would have adorned an old haveli, a home of a merchant.
Its impressive age is evident in the patina and layers of old paint which is still evident in traces. However, age has not dulled the beauty of the precision carving that Indian craftsmen are so famed for.
