Elevate your home cooking with freshly ground herbs and spices. This hearty earthenware mortar is expertly handcrafted in Iga with the area's rich local clay in traditional Japanese suribachi fashion, and paired with a natural sansho wooden pestle, or surikogi. Featuring intricately carved ridges, a handy pour spout, and a light interior glaze to prevent the bowl from absorbing scents.

The surikogi is made from sansho wood (Japanese green pepper tree) – a hardwood especially well suited to grinding seeds, chilis, beans, miso, tofu, and other herbs and spices. In combination with the textured interior surface of the mortar, the sansho pestle allows you to hand crush foods with ease, and to your own textural preference. 

The small size is ideal for the average home cook, while the large size is better suited to folks that prefer to cook in big batches or cook professionally.
